Hoe does inflation affect debts?
Answers: borrowers like inflation because they pay back in "cheaper: dollars "(same number of dollars but they buy less). The longer term the more the advantage.
Investors in bonds don't like inflation since most bonds have a fixed rate of interest and if inflation goes up they not only will get dollars that are worth less at maturity but inflation ususally means interest rates will go up and the investor is "stuck" with the old (lower) rate. In order to get rid of the bond they have to sell it for less.
So long term bonds are a big risk for investors and they usually don't get enough interest to compensate for that risk.
in a way inflation is good for debt.
eg --- if you owe 1000 pounds and if the inflation is high ,
comparatively then 1000 pounds will look small in future,
since your comparative income would have gone up in line with inflation
that's one thing that is helped by inflation.you pay off your debts with lower valued currency, assuming of course you have a fixed rate. For example, lets say you borrowed $100,000 over 30 years at 5%, and inflation will average 2.5% per year over that period of time. Your "real" interest rate is only 2.5% which is pretty low.
