Could investing in people's loans on prosper.com be considered a bond? IF not what kind of investment is it?

To me, investing in in people's loans thru a web site seems like a formalized IOU. I wonder how much accountability these people have in case of default.
It's similar to a bond in that it is a debt obligation you expect to be repaid. However, bonds pay interest only for their term, then return the initial money borrowed. Prosper includes a portion of the principal in every payment. So that at the end of 36 months, the final payment should pay off the remaining principal.

Answers: Well I remember my mother talking to me about the depression in the 30's.no one could find a job...or if you could, you had to take whatever you could get...digging ditches, or whatever.
Those with no income stood in soup lines to eat.
One thing that was very valuable was to know skills you could do...like sewing, carpentry, or whatever because you could use them to trade for food, etc.
And people became very creative cooking with what they had, appreciating what they could grow to eat, etc.
To be ready for that you could put some money where you can get it (not in a bank), store up some reserve supplies and food, learn some skills that might benefit you later.etc.
My mom told me of one Christmas when all they got for Christmas (six kids) was a bag of oranges.and having only turnips to eat. She never forgot it.
Holding enough cash is key. Having enough emergency money such as a money market or a high yield savings account will help trememdously.
