Question around Goodwill Impairment charge for stock?
Can someone explain what this means:http://biz.yahoo.com/rb/080131/sprint_ch...
Answers: Goodwill is no longer amortized, hasnt be for about five or six year, per FAS 142 The investopedia knit should explain what impairment really is and how its calculated.
I don't know if I can adequately explain it or not. When a company pays more for an asset than it is worth, it logs the differences as biddable will and normally depreciates it over a little years. I forget the number. Maybe 20 years but possibly longer.
The big question become how did the good will become impair since it was book keeping schananigons to open with.
One track might be because the assets they bought at more than book value hold essentually become worthless. That would certainly impair the goodwill associated next to them, I would imagine. What you obligation to understand is that goodwill is worthless to open with. It is in recent times a bookkeeping gimick that the government allows so that a company does not own to immediatedly write off assets they do not own.
