I want to invest a couple thousand dollars in stocks but I am not sure what companies to invest surrounded by. I want a big reward and will o for a relatively high risk. Any accepted wisdom please?

Well surrounded by my opinion the best preference to invest in is contained by Biotechnology companies.There are several small companies through out the globe (most of them surrounded by europe & USA), that are currently doing a lot of R&D of products but they still don't hold the money available to market them. The biotechnology pen is strongly growing, and investing in a company that have industrial biotechnology development can probably engender you rich in a few years.

You want invest a couple of g's, but own not clarified for how long or for what reason. I could speculate, but that would be a rubbish of both our time.
