Investing Questions and Answers

Can someone explain (in your own words) exactly what duration is?

Question:
I am reading it, but having a rugged time understanding it.

Answer:
Since you mentioned "reading nearly it," I'm assuming that you know that the duration is the weighted average of the cash flows to the bond and that it is a right measure of how drastic (read risky) the price fluctuates base upon a change within interest rates.

Here is an illustration. The cash flows (coupons) turn to the investor until maturity. Think of later life as the "board" on a see-saw. On the other hand, the duration of a bond is the fulcrum of the see-saw upon which the board balance. On side of the see-saw is the prevailing interest rate, on the other side, the bond's price. If the duration is half the parenthood, then a 1% rise within interest rates will approximately correspond to a 1% decrease surrounded by price.

The most extreme example of duration is a zero-coupon bond. Since there are no currency flows until maturity, duration = readiness.
The duration of something is how long it takes.

Example: The duration of the movie is 2 hours and 28 minutes.

But I don't enjoy a clue what theorems you're talking in the region of. That's just a generic definition of the word duration.
During the time its up
duration is the amount of time it takes resembling if you where chitchat during a movie I may ask you to stop talking for the duration of the movie (through the adjectives movie)
duration= length of time
To explain the duration of something in the context of what you are asking let try what is called an analogy, i.e., let's try to compare a similar example that would describe "duration".

You have bread and a toaster. You want to gross toast . You put the bread in the toaster, push the lever down so that the bread go down inside the toasted and begins to "toast" (if you look inside thru the top of the toaster you can see that the wires on respectively side of the bread are glowing red - terrifically hot -. So you wait.

10 second go by.

20 second go by

60 second go by

90 second go by

Finally after 2 and 1/2 minutes the "Toasted" bread pops up within the toaster, the Toast is done to a nice golden brown, Perfect!

Now the time that it took for the toaster to "toast" your bread and turn it into"Toast" was 2 1/2 minutes - right?

RIGHT!!

Well after 2 1/2 minutes was the DURATION of the time it take to make toast from bread within your toaster. Got it? Good Luck.

I'm pulling for you.
Duration is related to maturity. A bond pays an interest coupon every six months, until the principal is repaid at later life. Each of these payments can be thought of as a separate cash flow next to it's own maturity. Duration is the weighted average of these maturities (weighted by the amount of respectively payment). The longer the duration, the more volatile the price of the bond.
Duration is simply interest rate sensitivity. As the interest rates rise, the price of a bond falls... you would have to deal in it at a discount to make it competitive next to a bond being issued at the currently highly developed interest rates. As the interest rate falls, the price of a bond rises... you could sell it at a premium because the hot bonds don't have matching higher interest rate. Duration is a manoeuvre of how much a bonds price will drop if the interest rate changes. Its measured within years, and has something to do beside how long you have to hold the bond to seize enough coupon payments to receive up for the change within price due to a change surrounded by interest rates... the technical element I don't understand so much.

Then surrounded by 2000 i went to another finical planner (both planners I go to worked for Edward Jones) he told me that tech was hot. So I threw adjectives of my money into tech mutual fund. year and a half subsequently I was broke. I started reading every book I could grasp my hands on. I learned from my my pa. He skilled me everything. I also took a course in college and read too masses books to list. My portfolio have done well for me.
My cousin purchased $50 Harley Davidson stock (with a drip re-investment clause) for my son's graduation contribution in 1996 and give the same to my daughter at duplicate time. Ten years later, that $50 is worth more than $400. It's too discouraging that the stock is not doing as well as it be a few years ago or I would invest a lot more within it myself. Since then, I hold made more than my share of mistakes in daytrading (?) and am doing some research trying to build some good decision. One thing I've literary: DO NOT TRUST ANY ONE COMPANY OR PERSON WITH MY INVESTMENTS - DIVERSIFY, DIVERSIFY, DIVERSIFY! I have widely read not to trust the stock market reports I found online. I own heard "DIVERSIFY, DIVERSIFY, DIVERSIFY" and read in the region of but now I own learned it thru the conservatory of hard knock. DIVERSIFY, DIVERSIFY, DIVERSIFY! and it bears repeating again. WIth the Enron's and the Worldcom's and the increasing amount of corporate dishonesty and embezzle and whatever else go on, you can't trust anybody. But it is better to earn at least 10%-12% to some extent than 3% in nest egg or 6% in money flea market. One of the places you might try is www.bankrate.com. They seem to be object in truth.
Lots of books and self give support to classes out therefirst find some money you can afford to part next to...maybe for always.

Which direction grease?

Question:
What happens to the price of grease from here, over the next 6-12 months?

Answer:
Oil is heading upward. Here are the leading factors that I believe will bring this just about over the short term:

1. Technical. Oil have formed a bottom in the mid-upper 50s since finishing summer

2. Seasonal. This is the time of year when the price usually goes up.

3. Political. Things are heat up, so to speak, in the Middle East. The time of detached seems to be coming to an call a halt.

4. Economic. OPEC has exhibited serious desire to keep hold of the price of oil above 60. They cut production ultimate month and will probably do so again this month.

Best of success.
it will probably shift up but not as much as it has surrounded by the past 6-8 months
It will verbs to go up. There is evidence that the world have peaked in jargon of oil production, classification that short-term price drops will become smaller and more uncommon.

Even the Council on Foreign Relations basically published a study stating that the US oil requirements will requirement to be met by other forms of energy within the near adjectives and that conservation should become a higher priority. If those engagements are not taken, then we'll hold to rely more and more on foreign governments to supply our grease and these governments may be running out of grease for their own needs.

If the world have reached the top of oil production, later the price of oil and its related products (basically everything we buy that's not produced or grown locally) will contine to become more and more prohibitive for consumers.

Expensive grease won't be the end of the world. But hopefully, as grease costs rise, we will develop alternatives and be able to sustain our current lifestyle lacking the dependancy on foreign oil.

ForeclosureFish
http://www.foreclosurefish.com/...
I enjoy a good percentage of my portfolio within oil, grease services and alternative energy. In the short-term, at hand are sufficient supplies of oil and automatic gas, and I believe that energy stocks will be average performer. Long-term, we just don't own enough supply. The grease that is still out nearby is getting harder to find, and thus will require more oil services to acquire it out of the ground. I own drillers like NBR, and I also similar to th seismic equipment providers, MIND and BTJ, as oil companies wish to maximize the output of existing fields.

What is the formula for annualised return for investment?

Question:

Answer:
You should provide more detail in your request for information.

Are you talking give or take a few the APR given a periodic surrender or a holding period return? If time of year, then how tons compounding periods within the period?

Let's look at a couple of examples. Suppose that you are told that the relinquish of a US treasury bond is 5%. What is the APR. Treasury bonds compound semiannually. This means that you go and get 2.5% per half year. The APR is:

(1+y/2)^2 - 1 = 1.025^2-1 = 5.062%

Supose you are told that your morthage rate is 8%. Mortgages compound monthly, so your monthly rate is 0.667% per month and the APR is:

(1+M/12)^12-1 = (1+.08/12)^12-1 = 8.3%

Here is a tricky one. Suppose you put money into a checking statement at 4%. This compounds daily -- but at a rate equal to the stated rate divided by 360 (not by 365). So, the APR is:

(1+R/360)^365 = (1+.04/360)^365 = 4.139%
