What is short selling?

Question:
i found this definition: The selling of a security that the hawker does not own, or any sale to be precise completed by the delivery of a wellbeing borrowed by the seller. Short seller assume that they will be able to buy the stock at a lower amount than the price at which they sold short.

ok, but what do they expect by "borrowed security", (im sorry im new within this, even though it is recomended to new investors not to apply this technique, i want to work out what is it) thanx!

Answer:
I answered this question not long ago:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...
you set up a border account at a broker.
later you sell a stock short, (the broker advance the shares for you to sell)
sometime in the adjectives you will have to buy the stock from the marketplace and give it fund to the broker.
In the meantime, you will pay interest on the amount of money the stock borrowed be worth, you will have to hold at least 50% of the artistic value of the stock purchased within your account, and when you re-buy the stock, if you buy a a lower price than you sold, you cause a profit, if the stock has gone up when you re-buy it , you own a loss....and you have buying and selling commission to contract with as economically.
Short selling is selling a stock before you own it. Example (true):
I a short time ago shorted Wells Fargo yesterday, thinking that the stock would go down the subsequent day.
I 'sold' the stock in the past owning it, and now I HAVE to buy it pay for at some later time. It have gone down a little bit, but not adequate for me to make wearing clothes money, so I'll hope it goes down tomorrow.
Shorting a stock is perilous: If I bought 100 Jones soda at $1.00 a share, it would now be worth $30 a share (100 to buy, and a $2,900 gain.)
If I shorted JSDA at $1, and it is presently $30, I would have lost $2,900, because I HAVE to purchase it at sometime.

The most I could own lost by being 'long' is $100, but I hypothetically chose to short it, thus losing $2,900. (you own unlimited potential for losses while shorting, and maximum of 100% loss if you are long.
Again, risky business. I have gotten VERY lucky to own never lost $$$ on a short in 2 years. I other close out my positions in just about a week or less, because it is risky.
Try www.marketocracy.com and play around near a fantasy details for shorting stocks. I have 4 portfolios surrounded by my account, 3 long and 1 short, and my short one have lost over 10% in 1/2 a year. Try it in that before you do contained by real time. GLTY.
When trading stocks, bonds or tulip bulbs you need a buy and a get rid of. It does not matter what proclaim you execute this in. A buy and a put up for sale result in a nil sum. If you buy first you are "long". You do not actually lift possesion of anything, it is only a broadsheet position. Once you sell, your network position is 0.
Likewise, if you sell first you become "short". You abstractly borrow the shares you are short. Once you buy you net position is again 0.
In both cases the wonderful scenario is to buy low and sell big. Or better yet to buy illustrious and sell better!
The opposite is also true. If you believe that the marketplace you are trading is going to drop then you market first, hoping to buy back at a lower price.

Etrade, Good? or Bad?

Question:
Has anyone invested with Etrade. How have your experience gone with them?

Answer:
Go next to MB Trading. I've used them for years. $0.01 per share, $1 minimum per trade. No fancy website, no research, no marketing. Just cheap, fast, reliable trades.
It be a while back, but i closed the picture because of all these little fees they kept charging me. I'm currently using TDAmeritrade and hold been much more happier next to that service. Good luck!
I think they're newly fine. The web site is glib to use, it's convenient to do everything online and email inquiries are answered promptly. There's a toll-free number as well. Trade fees are competitive, interest rates too.
Excellent. Been using them for nearly 4 years.
I've got give or take a few four different family member in E-trade ( near IRA's) and I have no complaints...everything " tradeable" seem available...platforms simple to use..trades quick...I really haven't used adjectives their research tools, but they seem to enjoy them available. I'd say they are as well brought-up as everybody else out there...and they be DESIGNED to be an on-line broker...so they might be ahead of a few.
Personally I use Fidelity ...a couple of different " roll-overs" were already near them, so it was a short time ago easier to stay in impossible to tell apart brokerage. Their facilities are great, too.

Stop order/limit decree to buy....I don't attain the difference??

Question:
Ok I will try to explain my confusion.....

If I want to buy shares in a company and the flea market price is now 10.00 dollar...I am ready to buy it at between 10 dollar and 10.50 dollar but not more....
Which order do I use?
Limit demand to buy at 10.50 or stop order to buy at 10.50?

Is here a difference between the two orders?
hold on to in mind I don't want to earnings more than 10.50dollar.

In other words I want to buy at a price up to 10.50 or not at all

Answer:
the stock souk is actually a two opening auction system therefore a restriction order is the price at which you are prepared to buy or sell a stock for this reason you could place and order to buy a stock at $10 and a broker would lone be able to permeate your order at $10 a share or better.

control orders are typically used by short occupancy and day traders that are trying to return with into a stock at the best price possible
if you have ever be online watching a stock you will notice a bid ask price on a stock
the ask may be $10.10 and the a bid may be 9.90 what this if truth be told means that at the current time the untouchable limit writ to buy is 9.90 and the lowest limit direct to sell is 10.10. accordingly there is in actuality a gap surrounded by the offer the salesperson want to sell at 10.10 and the buyer requests to buy at 9.90 anybody that puts in a marketplace order would automatically receive any of these prices if you bought youd buy at 10.10 if you sold you would sell at 9.90. If you considered necessary to buy this stock at the best price possible you you could actually place an lay down to buy at 9.95 and the bid would increase to 9.95 and you would be the highest bidder hence you would receive the first stock sold with a flea market order since you are the greatest bidder. Many day traders try to draw from inbetween these spreads cause you could after turn around once you get the stock and hold out to sell at 10.05 presently you would be the lowest offer to provide and the first market writ that came contained by would sell your stock. if you where on earth a day trader and you only just bought and sold 2000 shares like this you would hold just made $200 dollars contained by a matter of minutes. This is the actual true intended use of the consideration order is to place your bid to buy or donate to sell. but if your present is not the best then your directive may not be filled. That is why within the above awnsers one person states that you use this if you want to buy the stock if it go down because at some point your limit may be the best bid to buy surrounded by a falling market.

A stop demand is to prevent a loss for example lets say-so you bought 100 shares of a company at $10 a share to prevent a large loss you could place a stop charge which would be an order to market if the market drops. if you placed a stop at $9 if the stock decrease in price to your stop at $9 next your order would be executed at or close to $9 to prevent further loss. but remember not to set stops to tight because of natural volatility could trigger an impulsive trade for instance a stock may drop $.50 and then increase a few dollars
"I am prepared to buy it at between 10 dollar and 10.50 dollar but not more.... Which order do I use? Limit instruct to buy at 10.50 or stop order to buy at 10.50?"

You should use a define order.

"Is at hand a difference between the two orders?"

Yes, near is a difference. If you use a stop order to buy at $10.50, that way you want to buy the stock only if the price is exactly $10.50. If you use a constrain order, that medium you want to buy the stock at or below $10.50.

Also, with a stop directive, there is no guarantee that you will salary exactly $10.50. You may end up paying $10.53, for example. But if you use a stricture order, you can be sure that you will not remuneration more than $10.50 for the stock. So, you should use a limit decree in this covering.
kinda dumb to use a limit establish on this scenario (limits work better if you think the price will drop so you set a target of a more comfortable price) stop lay down (stop loss) is a price that you cannot afford to lose anymore money.

ex say MNO stock is at $10 but you read some report one night that may bring the price down so while you resembling it at $10 you feel better if ithe price be around 9.50 so you place a limit writ for it at 9.50 if it hits fine if not next you could do a limit lay down say at 10.10 to cover an upward swing. So immediately you have it and it shoots up to $13 but that report you saw came into sincerity and the stock drops to $5 if you placed a stop order utter at $9 then you lost rather bit but its not that bad or if you put a stop on it at $11 after you came out in good health ahead of teh game. stops can work any way but on it going up you better manufacture sure it gets to a price where on earth you do not feel comfortable near. i dont use stop orders on upwardsomentum (let them ride) but if they gain too high, after I would put a stop order lower than that huge ride (say mno goes up to $20 consequently I would want a stop loss at $17 to lock in your gains)
Stop demand - aka stop loss order or stop flea market order.
Once the stop price have been touched it will be executed, regardless. This money that it turns into a market writ once the set price has be reached.
A delineate order then again will only be executed at or below the specified price for a buy and at or above the specified price for a put on the market.
You can also have a stop-limit lay down where the stop decree turns into a limit demand once the stop price has be reached.
For more info own a look at the SEC website link below.
Under your scenerio you would want to use a contain buy order since you don't want to pay packet above 10.50 and a stop has no confine to what it will pay since it is a souk order.
Happy trading.

What's the difference surrounded by amex and nasdaq?

Question:
What are some major differences within the AMEX and the NASDAQ?

Answer:
The American Stock Exchange (AMEX) is an American stock exchange situated in New York. AMEX is a mutual group, owned by its members.

The Exchange traces its roots subsidise to colonial times when stock brokers created outdoor markets to trade fresh government securities. The AMEX started out as such a open market at the curbstone on Broad Street near Exchange Place. The curb brokers gather around the lamp posts and letters boxes, resisting wind and weather, putting up list of stocks for sale. As trading commotion increased, the shouting reached such a soaring level that special foot signals had to be introduced so that the brokers could verbs trading. In 1921 the market be moved indoors into the building where it still resides, and the appendage signals remained in place for decades even after the move.

NASDAQ (originally an acronym for National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations system) is an American electronic stock flea market. It was founded within 1971 by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), who divested it in a series of sale in 2000 and 2001. It is owned and operate by The Nasdaq Stock Market, Inc. (NASDAQ: NDAQ) the stock of which was down on its own stock exchange in 2002. NASDAQ is the largest electronic screen-based equity securities bazaar in the United States. With approximately 3,200 companies, it list more companies and, on average, trades more shares per day than any other U.S. flea market.[1] The current chief executive officer is Robert Greifeld.
AMEX was for adjectives of the stocks that couldnt afford to list on the NYSE. Frankly I am surprised it is still around, but it is a milieu for exchange. Kindof a dinosaur left over, a second tier to the NYSE. It be started by companies in the midwest tired of self squeezed out by the New Yorkers
NASDAQ is the newest and really is a product of the electronic age. The reporting of financial background for the listing is much different than the others (good or bad) but self much less expensive, it allows for masses more companies to offer stock. For NASDAQ, the stock must declare at least a $1 per share price to stay tabled.

Should I get rid of within May and be in motion away?

Question:

Answer:
Yes.
Unless you're selling way below open market value, or hold already agreed to a sales price, you can solitary offer to put on the market. You won't be guaranteed a sale.
You'll miss the "summer call up."

I never pay any attention to any of these truisms.
Hi..

The rationale to sell is if what you hold have lost steam
and is likely to come down.

The other foundation to sell is if you want to lift profits:

at 50%..sell partially lock in profits
at 75% ..provide rest lock in profit
etc

Or if you want to budge on holidays.
i dunno, are you going to buy in july an see it fly, or please remember to sell short surrounded by september....what about the june swoon (no lurk, that's the chicago cubs). the answer is: not unless your stock or etf warrants anyone sold. those sayings are just weak investor sayings based on what happen historically. may and october are historically the worst months, but remember we set the first of a long series or record high in the dow on oct 3rd, later year.

Your system should tell you when to buy and when to put on the market.

If you don't have a system later get one..own a look

Has anybody else encounter solicitors after using Morningstar.com?

Question:
I was using the service on Morningstar.com because it offered a consolidated day by day look at my finances from several brokerage houses together.

Now, I get constant phone call from semi-legitimate firms offering different stocks or funds, but these guys sound straight out of the movie "Boiler Room" - strong Northern Jersey accent with little concept what the cr@p stock actually does. They other ask how my quarter is going and what I can do this quarter, etc? Just a nuisance.

Anybody else run into this near Morningstar.com or another service, if so, please share.

Yeah, I know Morningstar.com sold my name for XYZ amount of money, but for human being the nation's weather vane on fund performance, do you ponder this is out of left pasture for them?

(BTW, I know it's Morningstar.com because I accidently misspelled my name on the depiction and it's funny to hear the missprounced name respectively time.)

Answer:
I have have the same experience. The multitude of pop up Windows is equally annoying.
Well thank you for the head up because I wont be doing business with a company that sell my name or my business history to the hightest bidder. Thanks
LOL, the Boiler Room suggestion cracked me up!
