How does technology sustain mutual fund investors?

Speed of information retrieval primarily. Then the ability to compare surrounded by a matter of second the historic gains and losses contained by bull and bear flea market conditions, the projections of future gains/losses, the relative risk/reward of funds, and the ranking of a fund in its peer group.

The advantage of mutual funds over direct stock purchases is that within selecting stocks you necessitate to study and compare the operations and returns of thousands of individual companies, where on earth with mutual funds you are hiring the fund representative to do that for you, and all you inevitability to do is select an area of fund investment (small sunhat, large trilby,...), and select a fund manager that have a good track copy for investing the monies of the fund. How do you know if the manager is any well-mannered? By how well his fund have performed contained by the past compared to other funds of one and the same class.

Only if you use it. But technology has made research much easier and more accessible.

I would avoid mutual funds. Do your own research, keep hold of your eyes open, distinguish trends, and pick your own companies to invest in. (ie: Apple computer over Microsoft.) For instance look at the top performing stock within one of your mutual funds. What kind of return would you own gotten if you had bought that stock instead of the fund. Look at their competitors contained by their industry. Are there other strong companies to invest contained by?

Yahoo finance have good research tools. Also, check out Thestreet.com, and read Jim Cramer's columns.
Up-to-date screen on performance and expenses. In the desperate old days you have to buy a magazine or newsletter to get out-of-date comparative fund info, and most list were incomplete.

Best of adjectives is that on-line trading makes it affordable to trade exchange-traded funds so you don't have need of mutual funds and all their strict rules.
You have 2 solid good answers to your give somebody the third degree. I agree somewhat with the responder that stated you should do your own research. I do not agree completely. Some mutual funds do enjoy an advantage over what you can do. Funds that invest within foreign countries and funds that invest in small boater stocks.

How has technology help? Thank God for the internet and on line brokers.
I can check out a range of mutual funds, compare their performance, using websites resembling the following:

Safety - safe, FDIC insured up to $10K. Unless someone bombs your sandbank, the money is safe.

Growth rate - this SUCKS for savingts accts. They dispense less tthan 1% return. If youre interested within savings accts, use Orange (ingdirect.com) who is offering 3.95% currently - agency better, but still not as good as a disc.

Inflation Protection - none. Inflation grows faster than the measly 1% return youre getting...

Liquidity - excellent! You can get at it whenever you involve to witth an ATM card!

Intrinsic Value?

Here is my question. The current annual dividend per share is 1.75. Three years ago the dividend be 1.35. The stock is trading for $50 / share. If I am requiring 12% compunded annually to invest in the stock. What is the stock intrinsic appeal?

Answers:
You can use the Dividend Growth Model to value your investment base on the current dividend, estimated growth in the dividend and your required return.

The current dividend is 1.75 and base on 3 yr history (assuming this growth will continue) your dividend is growing at 9.04%. Your required return is 12%.

The stock will return 12% if you were to buy it at no greater than $64.37.

Value = (Current Dividend x (1+ dividend growth)) / (Required Return - Dividend Growth)

But this worth is only loosely within line beside the concept of "intrinsic value". Instead of explaining the concept of "intrinsic value" here, let me point you to the definitive source on intrinsic meaning - Warren Buffett.

Did souk motion Wednesday, April 12, indicate a top?

There was fitting news on returns and trade deficit, but the major indices didn't turn up much and volume was low. Market breadth on NYSE and NASDAQ be about even. I'd read out it was a pretty disappointing reflection from Tuesday. Does anybody see a case for the bulls within today's market?

It is of late a little hasty to say that we for sure own reached the top, but the motion of many life-size cap stocks have been truly disappointing during the second couple of months. And then in attendance is the economy and the rule. There are two minuses. Perhaps a good bet is to move some of your money overseas. China comes to mind. If you can't overwhelm them, join them. Japan have been also acting upright lately.

Stock option, how do they downsize a companies pre-tax income?

Answers:
A stock option is an bestow or promise by a company to another party to put up for sale to the other party company stock at a price at or below street worth. If the offer is made at a price to be exact below street value, the company can expect to loose money on the transaction whenever the Dutch auction occurs. This for accounting purposes is record as a loss to the company, and losses reduce the income of the company - and the loss/reduced income is record before the corporate taxes are rewarded, so the loss is pre-tax.

You accountants out there surface free to blow me out of the water, if I'm not right, but this is the mode my accountant buddy explained it to me.

Other Answers:
This is very comfortable to answer. To reduce pre-tax income you own to spend money before you salary taxes. This is the glory of having a corporation over the average Joe out nearby that pays his taxes before he see his brass. I will explain. First the average Joe 80 percent of the population when he works for someone else he gets his lame take-home pay check and a stub saying we give lots of your money away to people that necessitate it by law beforehand you get it its not in that fault its uncle SAM hes get his hand surrounded by your wallet before you do. Now then again you have a guy that runs his corp what he does is retribution his taxes when he feels close to it so if your a company you want to spend as much of your income on things you need and some you don't back you pay so your taxable income is instrument way lower. and you write bad the world :) is that clear. Hope that helps. How does this effect you. become a subcontractor settle up your own taxes and do the same.

Morningstar should have most anything you want to know just about mutual funds: http://www.morningstar.com/Cover/Funds.html

However, there's a good function why they say for mutual funds that former performance doesn't be determined much for future returns. Often times, the biggest gainers surrounded by the 1 year category just took huge risks or get lucky, so use some good shrewdness and try to do some research before investing, to some extent than just picking the finishing hot mutual fund, which is a good mode to get underperformance.

Is the stock bazaar unsophisticatedly controlled by the rich and powerful who can well press it?

Answers:
Thin Kaboudit has it right.

m. b. spends too much time watching birds, I regard.

Market manipulations by corporate insiders is done through misleading advertising, and "information" leak, not on the floor of any exchange.

Think if you will about the probability of getting several thousand corporate execs, the folks you suspect of being "crooks", to agree to work to knead the market. Any agreement they might brand name with respectively other on Monday would be forgotten by Wednesday if they were truly as greedy as you and m. b. suggest. They would adjectives be trying to kill respectively other for a few more billion dollars if your scenerio were true. And when would they hold time to perform their corporate duties.

The truth is that the flea market is so large (billions of dollars) that no soul or group of persons could possibly get much of an impact on its actions.

Other Answers:
yes because singular hearts of low profile folks are ready for public sale out and the hearts resembling stone of rich persons 25 hour yes 25 hours not 24 hours undo in flea market for purchasing with out and near body.

The in plain sight answer is no. If anyone could truly control the market, here wouldn't be one any more. Your question is rather like asking if lottery numbers can be fixed by a secure group of people. If they could, that "certain group" would adjectives have won by presently and buggered off to some attractive island in the South Pacific. The stock flea market is a beast unto itself, which is why it survives within pretty much the same form after over a century of wandering around.
The wonderful use of it is that no-one, however smart, can be sure what it will do in the short occupancy, but that everyone who thinks the world will still be here contained by twenty years can be close to 100% confident it will be higher afterwards that it is today.

I love this country! You have two answers already. I do not approaching either. Yes, the bazaar for certain stocks can be manulated and they enjoy been over and over. The specialist on the floor of the NYSE exchange manipulate the prices of stocks. They look at the order book, which merely they have access to and they fix the bids for stocks so that they will clear out a bunch of stock loss information in the blink of an eye. Why do you presume a seat on the exchange trades within the millions of dollars. Because there is unproblematic money to be made.

And then in that are the corporate insiders. They manipulate the financial results of the company for their own profit. Screw the stock holders. Their bonus is the merely thing that matter to them. Just put that 100 million in expenses within the fixed assets and depreciate it over 30 years. Of course but who cares if we are making millions of dollars for our Customers?
