Answers: There are alternative processes that work successfully, and there are processes that are a dismal failure.
The most successful are by entrepeneurs who start with a good understanding of a rather focued market. They get ideas that might be called "a better mousetrap" something that will work better than what the industry is now doing, or which will make more money for the people involved.
After getting the idea, they next patent protect their idea, then they hire professionals to implement the idea. The professionals sign documents promising to keep everything a secret, because in today's world, millions of people are seeing the same stuff, thousands are getting ideas how to improve it. The person who makes the money, is the one who implements the ideas the fastest.

Answers: First priority is to get Patents in place .. having done that it's a question of do you want to proceed on your own (in which case you need to find Grants), or in partnership with others (in which case you need Investors) ?
After raising what finance is possible via re-mortgages, and asking family and friends, I would suggest looking for a 'Business Angel' (but be prepared to give up good fraction of your business).
Generally it's a good idea to do as much as possible before looking for external investors - see eg. Dragons Den - the inventor with some actual production & sales gets offered much more money for a smaller fraction of their business than the one who has nothing but an idea.
When it comes to grants, in the UK, the National Health Service has a virtual monopoly = so I would suggest contact the Health Service for a grant. There may also be grants available via the National Lottery 'good causes'' fund etc. ..
(very few people make much money in the UK Health related products, however it's a good stepping stone to te US market)
In USA there is a thriving private health industry .. however Patents etc. are even move vital befor approaching others (I beleve ''ínventors clubs' exist that can assist) . then I suggest you consider approaching one of the many ''Institutions for the Blind'' and see what they suggest ..
