As a consumer/buyer, how do I protect myself from Ebay and similar websites when making purchases?Answers: First, read the description of whatever you're interested within VERY CAREFULLY. If you have ANY question about something, ask earlier you bid.
NEVER bid on something if there are no pictures, or if the dealer is in another country.
ALWAYS check the seller's feedback rating. Anything smaller amount than 90% and I don't go in close proximity them. Don't just look at the numbers -- look at the COMMENTS other buyers donate. You'll get a tremendously good insight into what munificent of seller they are.
NEVER bid on something that includes the words "change only".
I very seldom bid on something that doesn't present PayPal as a payment chance. With PayPal, you have a resource to turn to if they don't ship the item after you pay for it.

First, other use a credit card when you make a purchase. Therefore, this will make a contribution you some protection. If you don't get what you demand you can dispute the charges with your credit card company.
Second, single buy from sellers who hold very big ratings. Spend a few minutes looking at a seller's rating before you bid on a product.
Third, bump up hell if you have any problems. File a complaint beside eBay, with Paypal, next to the FTC, the Better Business Bureau, the attorney general contained by your state, etc.
eBay is famous for providing positively no customer service. It's truly amazing that they get away near it. Everyone has a horror story in the region of eBay. (I don't buy anything on eBay any more because I was ripped past its sell-by date a few times.)

Get a paypal account and other use it. They're customer service is great. Read all the information on any product you want to buy. Sometimes fine print can be your rival. Read the sellers feedback. Do the math. 9 times out of 10 if a personage has 100 comments that say-so the item arrived broken out of a 200 comments. Buying from them might not be a good impression.
i've online shopped for years and never had a nightmare shopping experience.
Check out the seller's feedback. Also, see if within are any mutually withdrawn feedback. That is usually a bad sign. Some fruitless sellers threatened to sue ancestors who rightfully give them doomed to failure feedback.

A big part of this is keeping the buyers bullish. If it is sold "as is" state it. Tell them when you will ship and be honest. IOW, I will ship 2 days after receiving payoff. You should be tracking the shipment online. When you see they have received it, email them and ask them if they are cheery with it. Settle any dispute in the past they give you a glum. Communication is a major switch. Pack things well. Don't jack up the charges on shipping.
If you do not force them to salary immediately next to PayPal (only available with a Buy It Now), the specify contained by your auction how long they have to pay cheque.
State everything in your auction. Leave nil to guess work. Tell them that you will ONLY ship to a "Confirmed" Address. IOW, don't let them have a word you into shipping it to their brother in a different state. Make this clear upfront.

A buyer can "dispute" the transaction through PayPal. For two reasons... one is that it be not received, and second if it was "significantly" different than what you claimed within your auction. PayPal (not eBay) will decide the dispute. If they win, they obtain a refund that does not include shipping price. If they salaried PayPal, with a credit card, they can force a "charge rear." PayPal must refund them the full amount, including shipping. However, PayPal will probably terminate their PayPal account unless they go through the dispute process.

Go through PayPal and you will be fine. Take no checks.
Set a reserve price, if its not a hot item. I just sold a fireplace grate I bought at Christmas time for 114.50, and I get one bid for 0.99. lol
Also, get distribution confirmation. I had some guy win my auction for a $100 bequest card to a restaurant for $19. He decides to write ebay and claim he never received it, and he wrote my actual signature in a complaint on my ebay (he get my name from emails we exchanged.) The message said "where on earth is my item (my name)... the money cleared 7 DAYS AGO..." Too bad for him, I get delivery confirmation and so I told him so, and he shut up after that. But the complaint is still on my profile! Ebay wouldnt do anything around him doing that since they said it might have be a mistake on his part, nor would they erase the comment he not here on my profile.
Thats my only guidance. I've gotten fleeced bad every time I've sold anything on near. I don't recommend it... at all. There are so several trolls around without job who lurk around ebay to take profit of unassuming people.

What do you want to protect yourself from? In general it is upright to follow good practices...
Make sure your descripttions are accurate, clear and true. This path people don't find upset for not getting what they expected.
Never promise what you can't deliver. Ebayers are good at going away negative feedback when they are not relaxed.
Never,ever ship something until you have the money within your hand (or your paypal account). This is simply common sense.
Always ship using a tracking number (UPS or Fedex) or a conferral confirmation (USPS). So that you can prove that they received the item. If they think you are dumb, they can only claim they never got it and ask for a settlement.
Always check buyers feedback. This will tell you if they enjoy failed to discharge or paid unpaid or things like that.
Always use your means to block certain bidders from bidding on your item. I other block any bidders who have stricks for non payoff. This way I don't hold people bidding who enjoy a habbit of not paying.
Always cancel bids that you are not comfortable near; ie: their feedback as buyers looks bad (too plentiful negative feedbacks)
Always use adjectives sense. Remember you are dealing wtih strangers. Feedback tells you plentifully. And communicate with the buyer when possible, use the ebay messanger, it is nifty and free.
I've been selling for 4 years and hold only have one package lost surrounded by the mail and a few non payers here and here. I always report them and draw from my fees refunded by ebay.

If you want to pocket Money Orders, ONLY take POSTAL MO's
Protect yourself and include Delivery Confirmation near EVERY order. Include INSURANCE if the item is worth more than you're predisposed to lose.
Remember, it is the SELLERS responsibility to get the item to the buyer. Delivery Confirmation and Insurance are your responsibility, not the buyers. Some seller include it in their shipping cost, but don't use any of this "not responsible for items once they make tracks my hands" garbage. If the buyer pays next to Paypal, it is a completely unenforceable statement. And, ebayers who know how things work will think you're a complete fool for have such rules.
Also, don't have more to your T&C"s than you do for your item description. That will engineer many hit the vertebrae button.
Go to ebay's answer center and take a great deal of time and read. You will learn like mad and it will keep you from making foolish mistakes.
