Its better to obtain an attorney... Its hard to do by yourself and also more time consuming especially if you dont want your idea/thing self patented by someone else.
after you get a official document, there is no assurance that a company will pick up youre product. in that are millions of patents that be never picked...i think the best piece is to copyright youre product on a compilation of information form at the copyright office at 1-202-707-9100. the copyright costs 45$. later you can approach companies and sell youre product on your own.
