What is a colliery timberman?

My great grand father be that, what isit? I searched the net and found nothing.

Answers: The timberman be the person who constructed the supports for the roof of the mine shafts. Coal be cut away from around these sections. No timberman worked on his own - and miners traditionally worked contained by teams next to their 'marrers' (Durham) or 'mates'. This was key because their lives often depended on the support of their mate - if roof timbers collapsed or a pocket of gas was found, they could verbs one another out. (In fact, it be the undermanager's job to record barometric pressure when there be the danger of a gas trickle. If the air pressure be high, it kept the gas stable within its pocket, but low pressure meant that it escaped into the mine shafts, and it could overcome populace very at a rate of knots. They used canaries to tell if within was gas just about underground; they literally 'fell off their perch' and died especially quickly beforehand the human nose could detect anything.)

The timberman's position was awfully important; if he get the supports wrong, disaster could follow. There was recurrently flooding in mines, and the supports have to be strong enough to withstand the flow of marine; they also had to withstand the shocks of explosions from other parts of the mines when explosives be used to start a new seam of coal.
There are some great pit folksongs around beside phrases like the one you mentioned. Rap it to mound and The Collier Lad spring to mind.
The timberman prob had something to do next to pit props. The older miners preferred them to pneumatic ones as they would creak and groan previously they broke thus giving warning of an awaiting fall. My dad be a miner in the Durham Coalface til Maggie Thatcher closed the mines
Put ..' colliery timbermen ',
within search not timberman.

how does shipping/shipping fees work on ebay is what this question really boils down to...
please tolerate me know i would greatly appreciate it
THANKS!!

Answers: Many ebay sellers will volunteer flat-fee shipping to keep things simple for the buyer. If you click through on any of those items, you'll see borders to it: the seller may one and only be offering the item to US buyers, and is not willing to sell/ship worldwide.

If there's not a flat shipping price down, there is repeatedly a "shipping calculator" to be found on the item page, where you enter your fastener code and have access sometimes to slower or faster shipping methods.

It's customary on eBay for the buyers to settle for shipping. The seller desires to recoup the actual postage or shipping levy, plus often a bit extra to cover boxes & shipping supplies. Some sellers will turn a bit profit on the shipping, if they think they're not going to be making much profit on the item.
There are two ways that a vendor can enter shipping fees on eBay. One is to enter a flat shipping rate. Normally the flat rate is only well brought-up in the U.S. For some shipping methods (Priority Mail up to 1 pound, Media Mail, First Class), the USPS charges like rate no matter where on earth in the U.S. the bunch is being shipped.

Another odds is to enter the package dimensions and counterweight (and the amount of the handling charge, if any), and eBay will calculate the shipping tax based on the destination. If that method is used, the buyer must enter the closure code or country where the box is to be shipped.
These sellers usually put a shipping price up for a controlled area...for instance, some don't dispatch anything to other countries so the price is only for the country they live within, and usually that means you cant buy their product if you are contained by a different country. The way they set this price is calculating the price of the type of shipping they are using (i.e. standard, express etc) plus for a moment they usually add to this price to pay packet themselves for package and handling etc...even if it may not look close to this to you that's what they do...sometimes they give you an item authentic cheap but they'll kill you beside the shipping price so it all ends up mortal expensive anyway and it may not look like they are achievement much money from selling a particular item but the item is they're taking some money from the shipping price as well... :) smart huh? and as you would expect its not always resembling that...some items are actually a great DEAL! hope that help!
