Answers: As the previous poster said, this is common. You can find out whether there is actually unclaimed property by going to the website of the state controller; there is usually an 'unclaimed property' section where you can see whether you have unclaimed property or not. If you do, it's just a matter of down-loading and submitting some paperwork and then waiting several weeks to get the property.
There are companies the follow public records and find such unclaimed money and property. They then contact the heirs or owners and offer to sell them information that will allow them to collect. It's all fair and legal. After all it's something you had no idea even existed.
In my own case I did some research after I was contacted and I found it on my own.
You can find out if there is money for you without paying a service. Go to the NYS tax department web site and look for "escheats". If you moved and the landlord couldn't find you to get your deposit back, or you have other money owed and couldn't be found, it gets turned over to the state.
