If i sell items at wholesale to a customer do i tax each item individually or totally?
Answers: Your choice. Most businesses follow the route of least hassle.
You have an invoice in which you list all the items, with their prices, and columns for quantity, and extended value (unit price times quantity) ... be careful with rounding if the prices go more decimal places than currency. Some companies always round up to the next significant cent, not to the nearest one.
At bottom of invoice you have total $ value of invoice, then what the tax is on that total. Be careful with tax rules. Some items are non-taxable. Some types of sales are tax-exempt. Then there is the issue whether delivery and insurance on the shipment is taxable. This varies by state government in USA, depending on at what point the ownership shifts from buyer to seller.
Also if there is a credit on the invoice, like a trade in, there is the issue of how to do the math.
Look at car sales ... you buy a new car for say $ 20,000.00 and trade in your old car for say $ 200.00. Is the tax on $ 20,000.00 or on $19,800.00? Well the answer is it depends on the state of the buyer and seller. When trading in other goods, the $ difference between trade-in and replacement can be much closer, and the tax question more critical.
There is also HOW the sale was consumated.
Let's suppose you are in Kentucky, and the buyer is in Indiana, and the order was phoned in.
In this case you do NOT charge Kentucky Sales Taxes, because the sale was NOT made in Kentucky but in Indiana. If you have no business ofices in Indiana, then you do NOT charge Indiana Sales Taxes, rather it becomes the buyer's responsibility to report and pay the Indiana USE Taxes.
Whether the order arrived to you in person, in snail mail, via Internet, the rules are different on what kind of taxes apply, if any taxes apply.
