When that happen, the company can either request you reimburse it back or purloin it out of your next paycheck. I've have it happen both ways.
Whose idiosyncrasy it is isn't the question. You recieved monies that you did not earn, so that money wasn't yours, so yes it has to be compensated back.
Of course you enjoy to pay it rear. You should have said something when you get the check.
Legally, you do not have the right to hold on to the money. The company made a mistake and you are not entitled to maintain it.
If you made a mistake on your checking account and over payed someone, would you want them to save the money? I think not.

If you live in the United States, the canon is very clear that you are required to wages back what you did not earn. If you don't, you can be held civilly and criminally liable.
It's not ur idiosyncrasy they overpaid u, but u didn't earn the $ so u should pay it posterior. If u noticed here was a discrepancy u shoulnt hold cashed it. If it was an oversight on your segment it stinks but belly-up and do the right thing.
If they underpaid you would you be trying to capture the rest? It's the same point but from the other side. Hope you didn't spend it all.
