The Kaplan GMAT premier program book isn't a bad start for studying, it have sample scenario for both verbal and math and comes beside a CD.
The article that sasquatch refers to have a lot of honest tips in it.
I took the try-out in Sept 06. I took a course for nearly $500. I would highly recommend taking a GMAT prep course. You may be disciplined ample to take time to study on your own time, but your instructor will know how to give you tips and technique and insight into taking the actual test. These are things you could never swot no matter how much you study by yourself.
