MACRS is a depreciation system that allows nation to depreciate things at a higher rate than the hoary straight-line method. Assets are divided into groups and a "life-expectancy" (if you will) is associated with respectively group. There is a table, called CLADR (forgot what adjectives the initials mean at the moment) that the IRS publishes -- I deduce in Publication 17-- that list the class life of sundry and sundry assets.
For instance, a company car have a class life of 5 years. Under the straight-line method, the depreciable argument is spread over all 5 years evenly. Under MACRS, the depreciable reason is depreciated by a percentage over 5 years. The first year is the highest percentage, second year is a slightly smaller percentage, third & fourth year's percentage are smaller but about equal, and the fifth and/or sixth year is slightly small. Also, the system looks at which month in the year or quarter the asset is placed contained by service.
So, the car specifically being depreciated beside a basis of, say aloud, $5000 under the straight-line method is 5000 divided by 5 or $1000 per year.
Using MACRS (and I'm sorry but I don't remember the exact percentage so am using estimated percentages here) the depreciation programme looks more like this:
Year 1 - 5000 * 32% = 1600
Year 2 - 5000 * 20% = 1000
Year 3 - 5000 * 18% = 900
Year 4 - 5000 * 18% = 900
Year 5 - 5000 * 12% = 600
