That happen to me the other day when I ordered something on string, so I looked into it. The postal service is trying to reduce misdelivered letters and delays within mailing by making standardized address. As an example, the post office would want an address to look approaching this:
123 Main St.
Anywhere, ST 12345-6789
This uses the standard abbreviation for "street", uses the postal contraction for the state, and uses the 9-digit zip code to further sort the messages. Think of all the different ways nation abbreviate Terrace, Highway, or Boulevard. And some people still address e-mail using the old abbreviation for states, rather than the two-letter standard one. Sometimes they in recent times don't know the standard abbreviation--MN for Montana is a common mistake. (MN is Minnesota, unsurprisingly.)
