You really shouldn't be doing anything else whilst driving. Listening to music is fine but you shouldn't really be taking and making phonecalls... even with a handsfree you will become distracted, especially as your voyage is a long one and you'll most likely be tired after a days work.

There are a few things you can do. One thing that I used to do be listen to audio books. It's nice to be able to if truth be told read (listen) to a book while driving, as long as it's something you are interested in. Another point (even though I have never done it since, was to draw from a CB radio, or even a Ham radio. You can meet alot of interesting empire on these. *Note, you need a license for ham radio.* Do you know anyone who lives around your nouns who works in that direction? If so, it may be a nice item to car pool. later you have the luck to talk and relate to someone while driving. And this would bring your gas and milage on your saloon down.
Learn or brush-up on a foreign language.

Don't try learning Japanese though...I did.. and it be so hard that you twirl up laughing and not paying attention to driving:) Also, can you motor pool with someone... that mode you can talk and/or sleep

oh my gosh that sucks!! can you transport other transportation like a train or bus? if so, you can read, sleep, work, listen to music, craft phonecalls or do pretty much anything and you wont be "losing" time.
if driving is your only process of commuting to work, then perchance you could get audio tape or cds of a foreign language. you can initiate yourself a new native tongue. you can get tape of pretty much any subject youd like to cram more on. maybe you can achieve a novel or appropriate book on tape as very well. youll feel better around using the time more constructively.
I spend a lot of time traveling within my job (my motor, taxis, airports, hotels etc). I use that time to 1) give somebody a lift language courses (from CDs) and 2) listen to informative/educational podcasts.
All you requirement is an MP3 player. Before I thought that all the time spent traveling be just withered. Now I long for it. And the best part of it is that most of what I listen to is free.
