I've done that, accidently... it was returned to my address next to "insuffient postage" stamped across the corner. I imagine if you're within the same city as the post department that monitors that particular box, the return is free... and if it's contained by another city different from the home address, they'll give you a nickname or a notice that you enjoy a letter to pick up from thier branch organization, and you won't be able to bear it back short an ID. After a period of time (usually 6-12 months), abadoned (not picked up) letters becomes the post office's property.
