There are different ways:
1. Check with Mapquest the correctness of the address. It can be as simple as this, but one website that advertised beside us looks incredibly professional but the address does not exist. They paid us near stolen credit card. They are BBB member but we could not record a complaint because BBB says that the address does not exist (how they become a BBB member is a mystery).
2. BBB contestant - but note that BBB is a non profit union, not government agency that requires every group to register. See my #1 example of how being a BBB branch is not a guarantee of the legitimacy of a website.
3. Check the EIN number using databases such as freeerisa.com http://www.freeerisa.com (they allow you up to 3 free searches) or http://www.knowx.com
4. Check into their business credit report. Buy a report either from Dun and Bradstreet, or the cheaper alternative is Experian Business
5. Check if they hold any address or phone number located in their website. Contact the phone number. If you can't obtain hold of anyone and you tried to call at different times, you can assume that something is not right
6. Check how recent the domain of the website be registered. The older the domain the more assurance you can seize that this is the real business. Scammers typically set up a new domain, create a website, scam other culture, then close up the site in half a shake. Note though that many owners are opt for private domain registration so you cannot see the whois details in language of contact name and address.
One rule of thumb to follow: if they are offering you a promise too good to be true, it probably is.

See what they want to settle. It would be beneficial for your credit rating to do the best you can. I'd recommend it. And if they offer you something honest, that's got to be better than ignore them. Good evening...I don't have any route of knowing what state you are in, but I know for a reality that in North Carolina, if your vehicle is re-possessed, it is sold "at auction" for pennies on the dollar......wholesale......the difference surrounded by what you owed on the vehicle at the time of repossession, and the amount they collected for the vehicle at auction, is your responsibilily...it is counted as actual "income" in N.
