Supposedly, the grease industry lobbies against the alternative fuel source funding. I haven't done any research, so I can't tell you if that's true or not. It make sense.
But probably a big reason is something you said yourself. We're usually pretty short-sighted. This is 50-75 years down the procession. It's not going to affect any of us and it's so far away. "Why worry?" is the common feeling.
Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing research done for alternative sources of zest but right now most of them are too expensive to be viable. I suppose if the cost of oil ever exceeds the cost of the alternatives, afterwards people will finally numeral out that it's a good view to look for better sources of energy.
