Question:I manage a group home for mentally not a hundred percent adults. I have three staff. One on first. One on second. One on third. My third shift is more or less to drive me crazy. She is young. Still lives at home. My 2nd shift is out for the weekend next to an illness. The 3rd shift girl--informed me she be taking friday and Saturday off. so presently my 1st shift tech and I have to do twelve hours shifts. I put 3rd shift where on earth she would get no overtime this week and presently she is mad. In my mind she doesn't deserve any. she could own worked her scheduled shift and still attended the visitation and funeral and NOT not here the rest of us hanging. Was what I did right or wrong? Please explain your answers.

There's nil worse than having to work beside someone who doesn't pull their consignment. In a job approaching yours, where here isn't many staff and you hold to rely on each other, you don't want employees who are going to clutch as much time off as they can. By doing what you've done, she should presently realise that she can't mess people around and still acquire privileges. Good on ya for doing it, I wish the head where I work would lift the same stance.

If you have something personal going on ie a funeral later you can't really expect overtime.
But if the funeral was for someone that she would own rather be getting overtime for, then that's her choice.
You can't please everyone.


i would fire her ungrateful butt. don't tolerate that stuff. they will do it all the time. i reason you did the right thing. Quite honestly it depends on who died, if a close relative, she is right, except, than she is wrong.

Ask yourself how you would feel if you have to attend a visitation and funeral and your employer still wanted you to work. Is the solitary reason she is driving you crazy is she is childlike and lives at home? That shouldn't determine whether she is a good hand or not. I think it is wrong that you a punishing her for wanting to jump to a funeral.

Depends on whose funeral it be. If it was a close friend or relations there is no road she could have come to work and done the situation any justice anyway. I enjoy lost 4 family memebers this year and tolerate me tell ya I couldn't read, pray, listen to anyone have a word, I was contained by a fog. You're probably feeling a littl bleak and that's why you asked the question. You can't modification the past so don't assault yourself up. You're the boss. It's the Memorial Day weekend and we all want for a time time off.....too discouraging it couldn't have be worked out in finance....like, we'll do a twelve hour shift on the Memorial Day Weekend and you two do twelve hour shifts on the July 4 weekend.....conceivably that's not legal, I don't know....but could your workers totter out and really leave you baggy? The clientel you work with are especially challenging....how can you be paid it a happy place for adjectives of you? How can everyone get a break on a national holiday?

well i guess it would depend on who have died. if it was a parent sibling afterwards i can understand her wanting for a moment time off but if it be someone who was not valid close then she could hold worked. so i guess that you are right but if it was an direct family contributor who passed then you are wrong

Wrong, you have a right to be upset going on for the situation you were departed with but I don't imagine you should have punished her for the reality that she needed time off for a funeral. It lately doesn't seem similar to a good manageral decree. It would be hard to work a shift if someone dies surrounded by the family or if anyone dies you are close to...........Now if she missed to dance to a family reunion or something resembling that ..........I would say yes she could of worked her shift but a funeral ................you are wrong


First off...who's the boss here? Your 3rd shift girl "informed you she be taking a day sour?" What the heck? Every job I worked at required AT LEAST a weeks sense for one day (except for emergency) and except, I was told "sorry".

You did right by not giving the 3rd shift OT, as again, how could she go and get OT if she doesn't actually work over 40 hrs/week?

More power to you however for doing this profession. I've been nearby and done that myself...oh what fun.


I'm a woman, and I estimate I'm a pretty strong woman (personality-wise)...however, I do not feel I'm direction material, and I prefer not to hold a female boss. THIS IS MY OWN OPINION!! For some aim, MANY (not ALL) female bosses are smaller number apt to bend or work with their workforce (especially their female employees) when something arises. I've have female bosses who have children of their own and were even single moms, but be NEVER understanding when I have to stay home with my sick child or thieve off a short time early to attend a parent-teacher conference. When I would return to work the subsequent day, I would obtain dirty looks, the silent treatment, the crappy shifts, etc. You name it. It's so ridiculous! For crying clearly!! SO WHAT IF SHE LIVES AT HOME?!?!? SHE CAN'T HELP HOW OLD SHE IS EITHER!! AND WHO CARES IF YOUR 2ND SHIFT PERSON IS SICK!?? PEOPLE DO TEND TO GET SICK!! Why don't you relax and bend a little bit. People die and general public get sick. You will NEVER be surrounded by control of that, no matter how illustrious on the corporate ladder you become. Also, why not speak to YOUR boss and try to achieve a few (or even one) staff member(s) to be on-call every once in awhile contained by case something approaching this happens again? Just a thought. Your staffing problems arise out of mismanagement. I wasn't within, so I don't know what working relationships you have set up next to your employees. I've worked at places where on earth I can take bad, and places I couldn't.

If your running a business for profit, then your organization must understand their piece and commitment they made with you. You don't run a revolving door business. I am sure you hold a drawer full of resumes like adjectives other employers.

I in recent times think they enjoy to understand they are near to work, and have fun as a bonus, but they are within for the business to succeed not the other way around. In a empire business with few organization, you have to own contigincy plans as part of your business model should you gain stuck with staffing.

Do you run, and are answerable to others, or own a contract where the personnel work for you? If you continue to handle a business where the body are representing your business and have no sense of professionalism, I wouldn't expect your business to survive. You couldn't claim to be the subject of your employees should it backfire, you have to govern your business to succeed. It's a management issue.

If your hiring dependable those to be there when you have need of them let me know. If the policy is that you singular get time sour for the funeral, then you did right. If in attendance were extenuating circumstances (i.e. the funeral be out of town) then you may want to cut her some slack, but that's at your discretion.

Since you are also the soul who makes the calendar, it is your decision as to whether or not she get overtime. Just be sure that there are policies contained by place & that you are treating all your personnel equally. Explain to the girl that if she needed to attend both services, she could have disappeared her shift one day for an hour or two, a bit than taking the entire day bad. She was given the time stale, it is not your responsibility to make sure she get overtime to make up for that.

It way you're screwed. You still owe them money...if you make attempts to flog your company you will be forced to pay them (lien holder) through your proceeds. If your company isn't making any money maybe you should seek counsel from an attorney as to what options you may enjoy. Bankruptcy may help but will probably not find rid of the lien.
