If there is a recession will it affect my 401k retirement plan?
Answers: Of course -- whatever happens in the financial world ends up affecting stocks, bonds and other financial instruments.
But if you're investing for the long-term, which is exactly what your 401k should be, the possibility of a recession doesn't mean that you should yank all your money out of stocks.
That's because the stock market doesn't necessarily react in a straight line to recessions. In fact, the market may very well recover from its current down cycle and do well for the next few months in the face of a recession, or it may tank completely even if we avoid a recession -- in the SHORT term.
Attempting to time the market through yanking your funds in and out of the market is usually going to result in reducing your returns, not improving them, for long-term investments.
If your portfolio has a proper "asset allocation", it will do fine (for the long term).
Don't allow the hicups in the market effect your long term goals. If you "get out". you'll never know when to get back in!
I have to agree with everyone. Who cares what's happening in the economy or world as long as you have proper asset allocation. Just make sure you have exposure to small caps, large caps, international, bond, equity, value, and blended funds.
Check with your 401(k) provider to see if they have tools that you can utilize for a proper asset allocation. I work for a large plan provider and we have such tools. Give them a call and request an alloaction projection etc ...
absolutely it will effect your 401k. If you're balanced properly then you will be able to minimize the damage but it will still hurt. What other posters failed to ask is how close you are to retirement. A recession that occurs during retirement years or just prior will do great amount of damage; especially if you are drawing distributions. Only way to recover from downturn in markets is to allow all of the money to grow back with the economy. If you are drawing on it then you aren't getting the benefit of the recovery for those withdrawn dollars.
Other way to prevent recovery is to panic and put your money in the Money Markets. Doing this essentially puts you in the sell low/buy high category and you destroy your accounts.
So my advice (and it's only my opinion) is that if you're young, balance your account accordingly. If you're older then do the same, but more conservatively, and consider postponing retirement or look for other sources of income rather than drawing on your account.
