HELP - Time running out - What is the difference between a Solicitor demanding money and Debt Company?

I bought an item last year and rewarded the seller lb33k, the item be sold for lb39k, so I still owe lb6k. I later found out that the item have a few faults and enjoy not paid the outstanding lb6k. The contract of Dutch auction had a clause stating item be "sold as seen" so I have no recourse on that. I own now received a reminder from the sellers solicitor, demanding full costs or it goes to court. I own until 16th Jan to pay, unsophisticatedly I have not get the money to pay.
So, what is the difference between solicitor demanding donation and a debt company demanding payment. Will it shift straight to legal on 16th Jan ?
I own already written to the solicitors, explained the situation and told them I cannot pay by 16th Jan.
Getting a bit worried very soon

Answers: The primary difference is, if a solicitor says "compensate by x date or it goes to court', they hold probably already filed suit and the travel case is scheduled for that date. If a debt collector say the same, they may or may not hold any intention to actually sue. If you tender to make payments over a pretty good time, the solicitor will probably accept the plan and hold the court sign off on the agreement.
It is habitually cheaper for people surrounded by these situations to use a solicitor than a debt collection agency. But as already said the process of actually going to court will probably be quicker. If you offered a grant scheme within your letter likelihood are it will be accepted short going to court. If however you do have to step to court take along a copy of your personal budget to show and state what you can clear and when on either a weekly or monthly principle.
Hope this is of some help.
Follow up your communication with a receiver call. I know it will be difficult to do, but personal contact (as opposing impersonal letters or e-mails) usually creates a positive impression. If you explain what your plans are for paying the debt, you hold more chance of avoiding a pronouncement against you and the resulting damage to your credit transcript.

Just a thought - were any representations made in the order of what you were buying (eg 'works well'), which might override the 'sold as seen' ticket?

A word with your local Citizens Advice Bureau might facilitate on both the above.

Good luck.
