To answer your question, though, gold has performed better and has historically been used as a hedge against currency devaluation and inflation. Answers: Ask for moral support from your family and friends. Just tell them that you have a plan to save money and ask them to support you with encouragement and advice.
Quite often excessive spending is due to the human weakness of a person, his/her inability to say NO! - and on its turn, very often weakness is factor of the surrounding environment - i mean, if for example, you hang out with people who spend a lot you tend to spend a lot [the solution is just don't hang out with them so often].
The other aspect of saving money is making money - instead of focusing on how to save the little you have, focus on how to make the most of your time. As a rule of a thumb, people who deliberately keep themselves busy with work are much much better in saving money.
