Has anyone ever used "prosper.com" to get a loan?
Answers: The first two answers here are completely, 100% wrong. Contrary to what littlemissmay says, a Prosper borrower sets the maximum interest rate they would accept when creating a listing, and the rate can only go down from there. There is no chance whatsoever that a Prosper borrower could have an 8% rate that "exploded" to 29.99%. Moreover, once a listing ends and the money is disbursed to the borrower, the interest rate is fixed for the three year term of the loan. It cannot change at all (except that it used to be the case that the rate would go up 1% if the borrower changed from automatic ACH monthly payments to bank drafts).
Contrary to what Lea says, a Prosper loan listing is all or nothing. If the listing does not fully fund, the borrower gets zero. Thus, there is absolutely no chance whatsoever that any Prosper borrower ever obtained a $50 loan at a cost of $30. Moreover, the minimum loan size on Prosper is $1,000 (more in some states).
Certainly it is true that borrowers with better credit have a better chance of obtaining a loan on Prosper. But many borrowers with poor credit have, and continue to obtain Prosper loans. It really depends on the particular cirumstances. Obviously, the worse a borrower's credit, the higher interest rate that will be required (all else being equal). Also, low credit borrowers will likely not be able to obtain large loans.
It is much harder now for lower credit borrowers to obtain Prosper loans than in the past, for a number of reasons. The most important reason, however, is that too many lenders have been burned too many times. The default rate on Prosper is abysmal, leading many lenders to abandon Prosper altogether, and causing most of the remaining lenders to be more cautious about the loans they make. For lenders, Prosper is NOT a charity -- it is an opportunity to do well by doing good. Unfortunately, it hasn't worked out that way for most lenders.

Prosper.com used to have a great forum where you could interact with the lenders and other borrowers and get some great advice about credit repair, making changes on your listing to get more bids, etc. Prosper deleted this forum and the new forum is super-moderated (every post must be approved before being posted, which often takes days).
