Even if the workforce is growing, so is the cost of living and adjectives other taxes. So it takes more money to live on. A hulking workforce today means a substantial number of retirees in the adjectives.

If I wait until full retirement age, currently 67, of which it's not imagined I'll make it, I will receive $1100 per month. The rate of return for "investing" in Social Security is embarrassingly impossible. You're better off you keeping currency in Mason jar buried in the courtyard.
Examine the model. If we assume that as the workforce grows there'll be more money going into the system that it will be able to repay the recipients, what happen if/when the workforce slows? It's a dangerous position to be contained by.
