What are the pros and cons of consolidating your debts? Is it true that it will be considered as your income?

My friend told me that her sister consolidated her debts and IRS sent a letter to her asking her to wages bec it was considered as her income?

Answers: Sounds close to she used one of those debt conslidation companies that negotiates settlement for smaller amount than full payment. The creditor sends 1099 for the forgiven portion and i.e. considered taxable income.

Typically these companies take you money and trash your credit. They don't money your creditors for about 3 months later negotiation settlement under threat of you file bankruptcy. Some credit card companies won't play and merely sue.
Well I consolidated my debt and it was the best item I ever did. After I was done I still have a credit score of 725
