Should i give up or should i just keep chasing payments? even if it leads no where?

Answers: what do you mean "chasing payments"?

Are you trying to collect money from someone who owes you? If it is going to cost more to continue pursuing the money than what you would collect then I would write it off as a loss and not do business with/lend money to that person again.

Are you talking about personal debts that you are just not getting any where on paying off?

Then it's time to do some hard budgeting. Sit down and list all of your debt. list all of your regular monthly expenses (the necessary stuff--food, clothing, shelter, utilities. the extra stuff--everything else) Have you eliminated all of the things that are unnecessary? Have you winterized your home to help cut down on power expenses? Do you live in an area where power is deregulated? Can you get a better rate on electric?
If you have credit cards then stop using your credit cards. Close all but one or 2 major cards and save the ones you keep open for emergencies only. The ones you close, call them and ask to speak to a manager--see if they will lower your interest rate, let them know you are working to pay them off and won't be using them any more.

On your debt: list the current balances on each item owed. next to each item list your minimum payments. Identify your debt with the lowest total balance. This is the debt that you will hit the hardest first--you WILL NOT pay minimum payments on this amount. you will continue to make minimum payments on everything else. When the small debt is repaid then you will take that amount and apply it to the next smallest debt along with the minimum payment you were making on that debt and you are still making minimum payments on everything else. You will continue doing this until all of your debt fund is going towards one debt and it is paid off.

see budget plan below for one suggestion of a livable budget:

60/40 plan for debt repayment. Live on 60% of your take home pay for your everyday expenses. Take the 40% that is left over and split it this way: 1/2 to debt repayment, 1/4 to emergency savings fund (ulitmate goal is 6 months salary in this fund--once you have 6 months salary saved then this portion of your check can go to debt repayment if you are still in debt), 1/4 to entertainment (if you budget for fun stuff like movie rentals, movies, video games, etc...then you are less likely to feel deprived and go off your budget and get deeper into debt.)

If the money that you have budgeted for your debt fund is not enough to pay off your monthly debt bill then you will have to take the money from your everyday living expenses or let something slip for a month. If this isn't possible then you may want to talk to an attorney about bankruptcy.

Good Luck.
I'm not sure I completely understand your question, so I will answer this way. You can either control your money or your money will control you. Sounds like your money is controlling you right now. The best way to stop chasing payments and control your money is to get yourself on a written budget.

Does anyone enjoy a suggestion for where on earth to turn (online) to capture a free copy of my credit rack up / history?

I want to check the history for any errors.

I've found a bunch of sites off G00GLE, but I don't know which ones are refutable.

Answers: You can find one free annually from each credit bureau.
Experian
Equifax
TransUnion

Go directly to their sites.
turn directly to the credit bureaus themselves. Equifax, Transunion, and Experian.

You are allowed 1 free report per year from each of the sites for no apology other than you want to see it.

You are allowed a free report when you recieve a note saying that your application be rejected because of information at one of the bureaus. the letter will let somebody know you which site refused you and you step to that site for a report.
