When is a Roth 401K a better choice than a regular 401K and a seperate Roth IRA. I'm 48 and earn $120,000 a yr
Answers: I'd think a Roth 401k and a regular Roth would be best. But it does depend on age and your tax bracket. Basically a Roth (regular or 401k) is best for people who expect to be in a higher tax bracket when they retire than they are today. In other words if you think your nest egg will really grow it will be a tax burden when you retire (but a nice tax burden :) ) then you should use the Roth because you won't pay taxes on it when you withdraw it.
Jim Cramer (who I'm not a big fan of) brought up a good point in his new book. He says only contribute to your 401k (or Roth 401k) enough to get the employer match. Then max out your regular Roth IRA. He says that is because the options in your 401k (or Roth 401k) are usually so limiting that the only point of contributing is to get the employer match (free money). But with your regular Roth your investing options are vitually limitless and you'll do better in the long run with that money because you can better invest it with growth potential.
It makes very good sense to me cause every 401k program I've been with has had pretty lousy and costly investing options, IMO. The mutual funds available had very high expense ratios and didn't always beat the market.
I know this doesn't directly relate to your question, but you might find it helpful and another way to look at your problem. Good luck.
because you're already in a relatively high tax bracket the Roth would/should not be an option for you UNLESS you don't have any other after-tax investments and you plan on retiring early. The goal is to let your pre-tax investments go as long as you can...
But your question is really when is the ROTH 401k better than the regular Roth IRA.that answer is when your income is high enough that an IRA is not an option or when putting in 4k into an IRA isn't sufficient. Typically for higher income wage earners the ROTH 401k is their only option (even though it's not really beneficial to them).
How much million makes one billion?
Answers: 1,000 million = 1 billion
1,000,000,000/1,000,000 = 1000
=P
1,000
:)
Caution: it is 1,000 million BUT could be represented as 1 million million in Britain. Financially I believe that a measure of 1 Billion in Britain is also 1,000 million.
