How much can I spend on housing ?

I heard a 'rule of thumb' once, but don't remember how it go - something like you should spend no more than 1/3rd of your gross income, or 1/4 of your web income on your mortgage or rent.

Do I have the formula right ? And does that factor surrounded by a reasonable motor payment ? My wife and I owe nought but our mortgage, and have no sports car note.
