It will almost clearly be less expensive to renovate than to build a strange house. Costs went up after Katrina and peaked contained by 2006 at about $150 per square foot for untried construction. It is now down to in the order of $120 per square foot, which is still basically $240,000 for a 2000 sq. ft. home (not counting the land).

You should know how to purchase a home for $150,000 or less (counting the land), and $50,000 to 75,000 within renovations will provide a very nice place to live.
