Small Business Questions and Answers

Anyone own a successful shop? and if so what kind of shop is it?

Answers: I dont know what your definition of 'success' is but I own

a gift/floral shop (10+ yrs)
a local moving company (2 yrs)

and looking into other business ventures within the next few years

although i'm not at either place daily (I'm a financial advisor at a local bank) I have managed to stay in business and make a decent profit each year
I don't own a shop, but I live in a large village with a number of small shops. Five or six of them change hands very regularly, We have just lost a really upmarket deli/coffee shop (not enough custom I guess)(I cried!). There are a number of hair dressers that struggle on - the hardware shop is good (but expensive and most people go to B&Q) and manages to survive. Two really good butchers struggle to make a living and shouldn't do bearing in mind the 'factory chicken' thing. The cafe and bakers shops do quite well as the margin is so high - our Post Office is really popular and a real hub of the village (new asian postmasters have made it so friendly).

But, the one shop that is mobbed all week and queueing out of the door on a Saturday is the green grocer. They have made a name for themselves locally and in the wider area and if you tell someone where you live - they may not know it, but they know our Greengrocer!

Wherever possible, they use local produce from the farms around - even down to buying fruit and veg from local allotment holder's - the minimum of food miles.

They are so good that no one round here buys their fruit or veg from a supermarket. And just think of the margin - direct from the market the cost is minimal, but they sell it at competitive prices (they even have the (one or two) restaurants that we have around here buying from them).

I have lived in this village for 30 years and I have NEVER had a bad item from them.

I am so sold on this idea, I have to say that if you were to give me a shop in the middle of town it would be a green grocers.

Slogan for our bakery company?.?

My friend and I are doing a class project and we need a slogan for our bakery. The christen of our bakery is Our Goodies, and we make candies, donuts, serve coffee, you go and get the gist... So any ideas?

Answers: "From Our Kitchen To Yours. Our Goodies"

"Sweet Tooths Wanted! Our Goodies"

"Our Goodies-100% Delicious"

When I qualified an advertising component, one thing I reminded my students is that the christen of the product should be included somehow in the slogan. That track, it is easy for the consumer to remember the baptize of something they liked and enjoy. Plus, it might stand out above the others who did not incoporate the name of the company into their slogan.

Best of luck to you!
you overheat it we eat it
the best ingestion service in town (=
consent to me know if you use it

Name ideas for a computer repair business?

Answers: Hi Leanne
There are three rules for naming a business and [no offense] the other answers don't meet the standard.

Make it memorable.
Appeal to your target market.
Describe /define your business.

A smart name has nothing to do with whether a business fails or succeeds. It has Everything to do with a business plan and marketing. Without knowing what your target customer is, I'll assume it's small business. Your name and computer repair doesn't appeal to a small business person. Small business depends on their computers and without it they lose income-period. Big biz-no problem, get another one. Family computer-OK we can wait. Small biz...I need it fixed now. As you build your business and build your brand your name has to grow with you too. Geek squad has done well with their brand, but might be a little too cute for your market.

How's.' QWERTY Biz Repair.'
Very memorable. Describes what you do. Needs some work on the target market appeal. That can be accomplished through a good marketing plan. Contract work keeps the doors open, and pays the bills. Entrepreneur.com can help. Spend 10% of your week on marketing.

Good Luck

Should be named something you don't mind saying over and over.
Rule of thumb in small businesses:

The smarter the name, the shorter-lived the business.
