CAD drawing: Prototype or Production next/cheaper?
I have a CAD drawing of a to some extent simple device that I'd like to eventually start producing. Could I use a plastic prototype as the actual finished product? Are in attendance any flaws that would keep it from anyone usable? And, is it usually cheaper for it to be machined out of metal? I could just skip the plastic prototype if it's not worth it.Answers: The answer depends on various things really:
If you are planning to make a really low quantity of devices, they don't obligation to be robust and you can sell them for a soaring price, you may be able to use plastic SLA prototypes for production. As SLA models tend to be extremely expensive & quite fragile, compared to equivalent injection moulded parts.
If you are planning to solely make something like 2 – 20 plastic parts
You could make 1 SLA model, Use it to create a silicone rubber tool, and next use the tool to produce up to about 20 plastic vacuum castings.
Vacuum castings are cheaper than SLA’s and can be produced within a wider variety of materials.
For plastic components at volumes around 100 you 10000 you can look at aluminium soft tooling. This can be over lb4000 but the injection moulded parts it produce will be dramatically cheaper.
At larger volumes you call for to look at hardened steel tooling, which again costs more and can take several weeks to tool.
When expensive tooling is required, it is usually a apt idea to first produce a plastic SLA prototype. This can be used to check fit & function, giving you confidence contained by your design before you start adjectives steel, as tooling mods can be expensive and time consuming.
The plastic prototype could also be painted and used for presenting to potential customers.
CNC machined parts again can be just as expensive as SLA’s but will be vastly stronger.
If the division is a sheetmetal component prototypes are slightly cheaper once you have rewarded for the initial setup charges.
