So I guess you can set your name not to be shown...How can I do that?
Answers: You can't set your own first name not to be shown. It's an option for seller to use to protect the identities of their customers. When you bid on the auction, it will not schedule your user ID in the bid history, so not a soul else can see who has bid on the auction.
The foundation they do this is because of the high amount of spam that bidders bring - some unscrupulous person will check the bid histories on guaranteed auctions and contact the bidders either to contribute the item to them separately, direct them to their own auction with a similar item, anything. It's annoying and can be a scam if they offer to go it to you.
It happens profusely on high-ticket items, so sellers near expensive or high volume sale will often do it to protect their customers from one annoyed or cheated with spam.

You are correct - create your own site rather than money all those fees to auction sites. Additionally, you will 'own' your guest list.
