Can my employer force me to sign a Contract after 16 months of Employment?

I've worked for my current employer for 16 months without a written contract. I hold always be paid properly, tax properly and worked 9 to 5 monday to friday.

I've asked for a contract several times as I read that I am legally entitled to one.

My employer have just done so. He's given me (and 4 other member of staff) a contract which he has asked to be signed and returned. The contract have serveral concerning issues. Such as stating that I am to work unlimited hours with no defined overtime rate. Also that if I give up your job the company I can't work within a 10 mile radius for 6 months afterwards. This would imply I'd have to commute further away from my home than I currently do!

Can this be forced upon me at this stage?

Answers: a contract, yes

this contract, not potential.

unlimited hours with no defined overtime is, as you would expect, subject to the wage and hour laws of your state and or city. you'd best read them [G00GLE will find them]

the non-compete clause as you explain it is unenforceable. to be enforceable it have to be of reasonable breathing space and limited to in truth protecting your employer. anywhere within 10 miles is gibberish as long as the new work doesn't compete beside the old employer. [if you're selling auto repairs and the current job sell electrical parts to different clients, for example, it would be nonsense. not selling auto repairs would promising be reasonable, though, since the customer plinth would be approx the same.]
