What is a good way to get permission for copyrighted material? To use music and such that isn't yours?
Answers: The only way to get permission is in writing. You need to write the artist and request permission. Another avenue is writing ascap, bmi and sesac since they control copyrights for most of the music publicly.

I have also heard you can send a small some of money 20-100 dollars direct to the artist (check or money order you need to be able to prove it was cashed) asking for permission. Though I have not verified this.
I once emailed an artist and asked with a surprise quick response saying to go ahead as long as I gave her credit. Save these correspondences in case you end up in court.
Anyway, it's smart you're asking and be careful where you're getting your information. There is a ton of opinion on the web.

If you are covering a song, you don't need an explicit license. The publishing will go thru to the registered publisher if your version gets radio play.
If you are using a sample, you must contact the company that owns the rights to the audio recording.
