Suppose a software engineer is cog of a support team for a small software house. One of her clients, a huge money broker, calls her first item in the morning next to a problem: last night’s overnight run to produce a report of the day’s communication failed, and the system requirements to be reset for the start of trading. Resetting the system for today’s trading will delete all information from the previous day. The reports generate by the overnight run are required in direct to complete the deals swiftly and densely.Without these reports, and due to the subsequent complications of completing deals through a different record system, the client will lose money. However, there is also a risk that the client will lose money if the system is not running to support today’s trading. The engineer’s administrator tells her that supporting today’s business should take priority. Any losses incurred by the client due to system downtime will be charged to the software house, and so the plan must get the system running underneath any circumstances. On arriving at the client’s premises, the engineer is told by the client that lower than no circumstances should the overnight run be lost. No provision was made within the original system set-up to cope beside the failure of an overnight run.
What should the arrange do?
Answers: I would advise the Client that the system must be reset to support todays business and that I know of no way to preserve the overnight run.
I would later ask that they allow me to reset the system - in the event that they throw out, I would immediately phone my Manager and ask for further instructions.
In this instance the wider issue is plainly the in short supply nature of the system 'robustness' and the Manager's attempt to shift any plausible blame for loosing data onto the Engineer ..
The Client should already be aware that the system have no provision to preserve data = and plainly the Manager should hold reminded the Client of this fact previously sending the Engineer to reset the system.
All of the above suggests that the Engineer should start looking for another job ..
