If you want to earn from promotion, the key is CONTENT -- engineer your content unique, appealing --- and this is significant -- attracts the demographics that advertisers want to reach, which are those next to spending power.
Advertisers will not pay much to achieve a demographic that has no intention of spending, but will income more if you reach an audience looking for ways to spend money.
--------------------------------------...
EDIT: I hold an online magazine and earn from advertising. What you want to do are:
- Think of the content you will write -- remember, topic is key. Write going on for topics that will attract people looking to spend money. For example, you'd earn more if you write a site almost travel to Europe since your site will attract those looking to visit Europe (e.g. will spend on hotels, tours, airfare, luggages -- widespread pool of potential advertisers) compared to a site where you discuss your thoughts just about the world (unless you are extremely witty and Oprah or Today Show suddenly invites you, chances are slim you'd win advertisers interested in what you hold to say).
- Decide what you want -- a blog or a website. Blogs can be free and easier to handle; most commonly have template that can give you nice looking site. With a website, you hold all the flexibility surrounded by the world but you need to give attention to of the design
- Get your domain name
- Start writing -- and later marketing your site or blog.
When you have several page up, you can consider applying to G00GLE a.d.sense. When you've built more traffic, you can also apply to banner hoarding networks and use them together
You get what you retribution for. I suggest you find something you are passionate roughly speaking. Go for it.

I do. You can create your own content base website on ANY topic that you like, and own it pay you. I started my site within August 2007. I continually add clean content to it, and earn a growing income from a number of affiliate sources as in good health as G00GLE a.d.sense.
I sell no products, pass no inventory, basically only wake up within the morning and check my stats. Based on what my site is doing, and what others do at this point in time, I can confidently utter that I expect to replace an income by the time I hit the 1 year mark.
My website also have a feature that doubles adjectives my new page as blog entries. This way I gain all the benefits of a blog and a website combined. Viewers can subscribe to my RSS nurture and get updated as my site is updated.
I know nought about html, design, tracking, adjectives that stuff, yet my site, 5 months antediluvian, is in the top 1% at alexa, get 10,000 page views per month, and have a G00GLE PR 2.
I build my site myself on the sitebuild it platform, which does everything for me. Block by block builder, hosting, pings the directories, tracks EVERYTHING, assists with SEO, have user forums, basically everything you would ever involve to have a website, they do. All for $300 a year.
