Everyone has their own reason. I personally set up my first company at 17 when i got sacked for nothing.
I now own a holding company which owns 7 differant companies in differant sectors, Construction, Security, Wholesale, Skip Hire, Internet Store, Internet Directory, and manufacturing.
Each company i own now was set up because an opportunity came along.
People start business because they have enthusiasm and loads of idea's which a normal company steals and makes millions from.
People also want to be in control of their own things and if they know the market and product they are going to sell. Then they will always suceed.

Often you have a great idea that you can make money from.
Sometimes you receive poor value or service, and think that you could do much better and make a profit.
A hobby can often take over as a viable business, you choose your hours and usually the more you put in the more successful you become.

Okay, I have investigational product ideas, but I maintain geting turned down by apple, motorola, and intel. So, I wanted to start my own business close to them so I don't get rejected.
