Crisscross give many righteous basic suggestions on what to do and how to conduct yourself. My daughter have been 'very' successful during junior glorious and high institution babysitting. I would guess the she bring in $10-15 per hour and sometime more base on number of kids, length of time, etc.
Her tips:
1) GO to local EMS/fire department and check into the babysitting training offered. Mainly it is pediatric CPR and safety training but letting the parents know that your are trained surrounded by safety can travel a long ways in getting business and making the parents quality good around your skills in taking safekeeping of the children.
2) Check with your parents friends and family unit members that occupy or go out on evenings together. My daughter babysits for a group 4-5 couples that approaching nites outs - 6-8 kids, 5-6 hours. The parents all collect at one home and bring the kids there. She make $125-175 on a nite like that.
3) It is a situation NOT a social time and you are caring for someones most advisable and loved child.
