I've been thinking just about the idea of first a small, new retail bookstore within my small hometown. There are about 20,000 residents surrounded by the town and surrounding county. The only source of retail books is the Super Wal-Mart, which single carries a small screening as usual. We have a library, but not a huge one.
The nearest small bookstore is nearly 25-30 minutes away and seems to do powerfully in a slightly larger town. The nearest "chain" bookstores are going on for 45 minutes away. I would probably rent the store space, and buy the inventory & stock units.
I know I won't find rich from this scheme, but any thinking on the start-up costs? Profitability in a small town?
