If here are no documents requiring 30-plus years retention, an inactive journal can be discarded four to five years after termination. If this seems too hasty -- perhaps depending on the frequency of suggestion requests about former workforce -- there's always microfilm. Microfilming is not overly expensive, the chronicles remain accessible and valuable storage space is reclaimed.
Overall: After a clear in your mind amount of time, if it's on paper but you'll probably never entail it again and there's no law making you keep hold of it, trash it.
