Patents can be costly. Last I knew you could get hold of a provisional patent, which costs profusely less than a government grant. The provisional patent give you time to market your idea/invention. I belive you can find information at the US Patent and Trademark website.
DO NOT TELL ANYONE YOUR ACTUAL IDEAS! Before you do anything, you have need of to write and draw complete descriptions of each view and seal them all right in an envelope (each impression in it's own) and e-mail them to yourself. DO NOT OPEN THEM. Put them in the safest place possible... I don`t know even a safe deposite box. The print copies of Non=disclosure forms (USPTO I believe have them in their forms). Make anyone you discuss your accepted wisdom with sign one. You can return with a provisional patent for with the sole purpose $90 each, but they hold back you to one year to do your real official document, so don't do that until you are ready to really proceed. You can capture free help from places similar to SBA, SBDC, SCORE, etc. You may also get leading corporations to consider buying the patent or licience the right to produce it.
