my husband and i both collected unemployment. he recieved 3500 and i gotten 4500. No taxes where on earth taken out we rent and have one child. how much do we oweAnswers: This would depend on how much other income you made such as total amount of wages/salary, dividends, taxable interest, business income/loss (if any), means gain/loss (if any), other gains/losses (if any), taxable portions of IRA distributions (if any), taxable portions of pensions/annuities (if any), income from rental real estate/royalties/partnerships/SCorps/tru... (if any), arable farm income/loss (if any), taxable Social Security benefits (if any), and Other Income (if any--gambling winnings is only one example). Then you obligation to determine if you have any valid adjustment (primarily subtractions) to your income for Lines 23 through 35 in directive to figure your Adjusted Gross Income. Then you subtract your Standard Deduction ($10,700 for MFJ) and after that you subtract your exemptions (you, your wife, and your child--$3,400x3=$10,200) to arrive at your taxable income. For the following working out, I will assume that you and your wife had income with the sole purpose from wages/salary and unemployment compensation and no adjustment to income. Assumptions are: Wages/Salaries-$20,900, Unemployment Compensation-$8,000 ($3,500+$4,500), no other income, and no adjustment to income.
Your 1040A, starting at line 7 would look resembling this:
Line 7: 20900
Line 13: 8000
Line 15: 28900
Line 21: 28900
Line 24: 10700
Line 25: 18200
Line 26: 10200
Line 27: 8000
Line 28 (Tax) is thus $803 per the 2007 Tax Table on Page 56 of the 1040A Instruction Booklet (income range $8,000-$8,050). As you can see from this computation based on the planned assumptions, you are in the 10% (lowest) export tax bracket. Then you would calculate any tariff credits you are eligible to take on Lines 29 through 33 (total on Line 34), subtract Line 34 from Line 28 and enter the result on Line 35, enter any credit EIC payments (if any) on Line 36, add Lines 35 and 36 and enter the result on Line 37 (total tax), next you enter your prepayments (add together all amounts from Box 2 of adjectives your W-2s) on Line 38 plus any other prepayments (Lines 39, 40a, 40b (if applicable) and 41, and enter this total on Line 42. If the amount on Line 42 is more than the amount on Line 37, you will receive a refund; if the amount on Line 42 is smaller quantity than the amount on Line 37, you will owe the IRS some money.
Its impossible to tell base on the information provided.
If you had no other income during the year, you will owe no charge. Otherwise, the unemployment will be tax at your highest marginal rate. Your other import tax information would be needed in demand to answer correctly.
The unemployment benefit of $8,000 is added to your other income of $32,000.
If you have not received the unemployment, and have no other deductions or credits, you would receive a return of $404 plus your withholding.
With the unemployment, you owe $110 contained by taxes. So your refund will be your withholding minus $110.
The difference within your refund is more or less $500.
