Does the tax cover people on ssi, ssd?
Answers: Your question is just a little cryptic but let me see if I can give you some info that might help. Disability (SSDI) benefits are taxable under the same structure as social security retirement (SSI) benefits. Accordingly, depending on your other income up to 85% of your disability / retirement income benefits may be subject to taxation.
If all you have is social security income, rest easy there will be no taxes due. But the trouble may come into play if you have "too many" other sources of income.
The amount includible in taxable income is the lesser of one-half of the annual benefits received or one-half of the excess of your provisional income over a specified base amount, at lower provisional income levels. At higher provisional income levels, up to 85% of social security benefits may be taxed.
Provisional income is your modified adjusted gross income plus one-half of your social security benefits. Modified adjusted gross income is your AGI (not including S.S. benefits) plus any tax-exempt interest. The base amount is $32,000 for joint filers, $25,000 for singles and HOH and $0 for married filing separate and you lived with your spouse at any time in '07.
The 85% inclusion comes into play when your provisional income exceeds $44,000 for MFJ, $34,000 for single and HOH and $0 for married filing separate. Accordingly, if your provisional income exceeds this higher amount then the amount includible in taxable income is the lesser of 85% of the annual benefits received or; 85% of the excess of your provisional income over the higher threshold amount (i.e. $44k for MFJ) plus the sum of the smaller of the amount that would otherwise be includible if the higher threshold did not apply or $6,000 ($4,500 single and HOH).
Yes, it can all be a bit convoluted in black and white but the IRS has some pretty good worksheets in Pub 915. If you're of retirement age you may also want to see if your community has an AARP Tax Aide site where you can have your taxes done for free.
Good luck!
