Off the books-On accounts?! Grrr!?

When my ex-employer first hired me he told me he could not afford to give me the income my experience warranted but contained by exchange he was pay cheque me "off the books" next to a personal check, and to keep it of late between us. Now that I no longer work their due do health problems while employed, he call me up to tell me that he is reporting my salary and that I need to settle taxes on it as well. What should I do? I am a single mother of 3 and I didn't plan for this... Aside from that the amount he told me to claim as my reimburse is SIGNIFICANTLY lower than what I actually get paid... roughly a $6,000 difference.

Answers: It sounds like you ex-employer is screw you over. He can't claim a deduction unless he reports the payments to you and wishes the best of both worlds.

I have a can explanation to apparently clueless independent contractors and, if you are asking relatively simple questions within this forum, no offense, but you qualify as clueless:

Some employers try to carry around paying employment taxes (social security and unemployment) and other member of staff benefits like workers compensation insurance by indelicately classifying employees as independent contractors. The principal issue is the amount of control the employer has over the worker. If you are required to show up for work--personally--at a distinctive time, punch the clock, use the employer’s equipment and are paid an hourly rate, or another set rate base on time served, you are an member of staff. If you didn't understand the difference when you posed your interrogate, I would be even more convinced that you are an employee. What is your nouns, Slotted or Phillips? Complete an IRS Form SS-8 to get an representative ruling on your status. This will help you find unemployment if you bring back fired. When you file your income duty return, you can attach Form 8919 Uncollected Social Security and Medicare Tax on Wages and only reward the employee's half of social warranty. You will still have to cough up adjectives the income tax. IRS and the states are stepping up enforcement contained by this abuse nouns.
It sounds like he is going to be sending you a 1099. You'll enjoy to report that and claim whatever deduction you can. And pay doesn`t matter what tax is due. It will probably be worth hiring a CPA to sustain.

Then if I were you I would distribute him a bill for the tax next to an explanation that you had not planned for this since he have promised this "income" as a gift to you. He doen't enjoy to pay it, but I'd bill him anyway.
Sounds similar to he tried to play the system and got caught. Unfortunately for you, you're stuck surrounded by the middle. It kinda sounds like he's trying to aid you as best he can by telling you to claim a smaller amount than what you be really paid, which would lower what you'd own to pay within taxes. I'd be leary of that, too, cause that could come wager on to bite you, even though he's trying to help you out. I'd try chitchat to an accountant (hopefully a close friend or relative) to figure out exactly what you should do- due laws create for a sticky situation.

I received a w2 and w2c which one do I use to do my taxes?

Answers: Use the W-2c, it's corrected. Don't use the W-2. Take a look to see what changed, the use the corrected version, only.
