Taxes Questions and Answers

Tax give somebody the third degree...I of late sold my house. Buyers insisted on me upgrading the existing plumbing prior to buying?

Prior to selling my home, the buyers wanted me to replace my working/existing plumbing beside new PVC plumbing ($3,900) and we also have to replace a lot of the mat in the house ($1,000) contained by the house prior to the sale of the house (under $200K). I know of anyone able to reduce by settlement charges/title/tax deductions to the mart of the house on your taxes. but what about the plumbing/carpet? Is nearby any way to factor these into deduction of the sale...thus in your favour a little more on what the house be sold for? Is that possible?
*** FYI, these two amounts.. (plumbing and carpet) were done beside no up-front payments. they were rewarded from the sale of the house and are surrounded by the settlement statement and are shown as paid (along near taxes) prior to my cash payout from the Dutch auction.

Answers: The plumbing and carpeting are added to your cost basis and cut the gain on the sale. If any funds gains charge is due on the gain from the sale they'd drop off the tax due. If you're eligible for the exclusion next they'd have no importance to you, unfortunately.
If you owe any rates on the sale itself, you might be capable of deduct those expenses from the amount of profit that you settle up tax on. Otherwise no.

Is this rebate a gift from US government or we have to pay it back? Do they take it out of our 2008 refund?

Answers: It may effect your 2008 refund.

While the rebate depends on your 2007 income, it is actually a rebate toward your 2008 taxes. According to the proposed plan, in 2008, taxes would be cut from 10 percent to zero percent on the first $6,000 dollars of taxable income for individual taxpayers.

It's like a one time tax cut for 2008, but you get the rebate now instead of waiting to file your 2008 taxes. Because this is an advance payment on your 2008 taxes, your refund next year could be more (or less!) depending on your 2008 income.
No, because it is an advance on a credit against your 2008 return. It does NOT have to be paid back.

It might be subject to state taxation for 2008. I am told that the last time there was a stimulus package the state taxed it as income.
