Do I have to skulk until I start paying the student loan or can I claim it now.

How much income tax do you owe? These are credits against what you owe, they are not refundable. In other words, the best it can do is lessen your tax liability to not anything (which could mean you'd take a refund of any income duty amount you had withheld from your earnings).

Since you are the with the sole purpose one in university, the Lifetime Learning Credit is your best choice. It will give you UP TO $2000 within credit toward your tax liability. You can pilfer this each year you're contained by school.
