Where do I find the section on the 1040 for deductions for home improvements?
Answers: I believe it's under the Energy Savings Deductions.
There isn't one.
Improvements are added to your cost basis and that number is used only when you sell.
IRS publication 530.
You don't. The only home improvements that can be used on your tax return are those that qualify for the residential energy credit. You'll use form 5695 for that, and can claim the credit whether or not you itemize.
No (EIN) on W2?
I got my W2 the other afternoon but it's missing the (a) and (b) boxes. The (b) box being where on earth the Employer ID Number (EIN) is located. It does have an Employer's State ID number on another box but I be filling my export tax form and it asks for both the (EIN) and the Employer's State ID. So I'm a bit confused, can I use the Employer's State ID number when it asks me for the (EIN)? and if not, how do I progress about getting the (EIN) for my employer?Answers: Ask your employer to provide correct forms
Ask your employer for a correct W-2.
Otherwise you'll own to file a article return by mail.
First time filing for tax returns. How much do i have to make to be eligible to file my tax return?
Answers: You can file a tax return with $1 in income. It would be a waste of time to do that, however. You are required to file if your income exceeds the filing requirement amount for your filing status. That amount also varies depending upon what the source of the income is.
If you are claimed as a dependent as most first-time filers usually are and your only income is from wages subject to withholding, the filing requirement amount for 2007 is $5,350.
See IRS Pub 501 for a full discussion on the topic. It's far to exhaustive to run it all down here. Here's a link: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p501.pdf
Even if you earned less than the required amount, if any Federal income taxes were withheld you'll need to file a return for them to be refunded to you.
If you are a dependent and had only wage income, you MUST file if your income was more than $5350.
If your income was less than $5350, you MAY file to get a refund of the federal income taxes paid in, if you paid any.
There's a big article in the Sunday paper today. It says everyone should file a return in case you are due an earned income credit. There's a huge amount of unclaimed money that people can get coming to them but because they don't file a return, it goes unclaimed.
